Riffin': Tell us a bit about your dress line 'Academie' - who do you have in mind while you're designing, what do you like about creating dresses and where did the name originate?
Academie: Academie came from the need to create something that we would love to wear. We chose to focus on dresses because they are the most enchanting and forgiving of garments.
We decided to call our line "Academie" because we continue to learn with each collection and we want to keep growing, creating and dancing.
Riffin': What is your workspace like and what music do you listen to while you design and create your pieces?
Academie: Our studio is full of friends, music, art, dogs, fabric, and everything that inspires us. As for the music, it is constantly changing with the moment and the season, but you will hear everything from Heart to Etta James.
Riffin': Do the two of you make every piece by hand or do you source your manufacturing? Have you thought about expanding the line to include separates as well, or is Academie strictly dresses?
Academie: We manufacture locally but do a lot of hand finishing ourselves. Right now the line is just about "The Dress," but I imagine at some point we'll branch out and do a whole bunch of cropped little-boy pants with sock suspenders or something.
Riffin': Where do you find your print and silhouette inspiration, and are printed fabrics an integral part of your line, or just a feature of your Spring 2008 collection?
Academie: We find inspiration everywhere: art, life, music, nature, film, botanical drawings, books and even shadows in stucco ceilings. Prints tend to reappear but we also do spare, monochromatic looks. Essentially, it's an art project that depends on inspiration rather than a set aesthetic.
Riffin': Which musician best embodies Academie and whom would you love to dress?
Academie: Hmmm, hard question. As for the musician who best embodies our line, maybe Chan Marshall crossed with DreamBoat Annie-era Nancy and Ann Wilson of Heart. As for whom we would love to dress, it would have to be Anna Karina circa Godard's "Pierrot le Fou," or... Lindsay Lohan.
